Obituary for Richard Dale Smith
James Richard "Dick" Dale Smith, 89, of St. Albans, WV passed away Thursday, April 5, 2018 at Hubbard House in Charleston, WV, following a short illness. He was born on November 3, 1928 in Marmet, WV to the late James Albert Smith and Nettie (Scraggs) Smith. He is preceded in death by a daughter, Connie Fitzpatrick and very close friend, Bob Samms. He was a master electrician by trade and was an avid outdoorsman, lifelong hunter and a highly skilled craftsman who produced hundreds of expertly rendered wood carvings and metal sculptures over his life. In his youth he was known for his athletic pursuits, playing football for East Bank High School and later ranking as an amateur boxer with the Golden Gloves. He leaves behind to cherish his memories; loving wife, Peggy Smith; three children, Shannon Slavens (Larry) of Cross Lanes, WV, Richard Paul "Chip" Smith (Erin) of Charleston, WV and Cathy Jean Martin (Gary); grandchildren, Andrew Tackett (Slavens), Grant Martin and Ashley Martin-Meade and several great-grandchildren. Dick Smith will be remembered as a resourceful and intelligent man of good humor who never shrank from a challenge. He will be missed by friends and family and by his beloved chihuahuas. In accordance with his wishes, there will be no funeral services. Online condolences may be expressed to the family below.
